God Bless You

Curated by Ruşen Aktaş

2012 / Istanbul

The thesis of East-West has been one of the main topic discussions for art besides politics. Especially since the 19th Century the texts of European authors and the artworks of painters created the East and a cult of people from the East, sometimes in a romantic way and sometimes a long way from reality. Besides telling fairy tales about the East without even being there, as well as to understand whether this contradiction exists. If yes, to observe closely to understand the reason.

One of the most important emerging Italian artists, Gianluca Malgeri is one of those who is seeking the truth. Malgeri began in 2010 in Amman this quest/ journey. After Istanbul and Rome he continues a second time in Istanbul. His critical approach to the contradiction of East-West is shown with his solo show, entitled “God Bless You”.

In Malgeri’s solo show at Galeri Artist Istanbul between 16 February – 4 March the main reference is “The Kiss of Judas”. As the thirty pieces of silver given to Judas to betray, he printed the portraits of dictators on pita bread. Dictators betray the expectations of the nation, attempt to struggle to maintain their presence in all conditions. The coins displayed on the columns emphasize the imposition of the rules. Some of the other works, such as maps, helmets, golden cage, the odalisque, love positions and dry flowers, are objective translations of a concept that comes before the image and its origin. Malgeri invites us to review the contradiction of culture that sinks its roots much deeper than the old rationalism tends to give.
